All are welcome to gather with us in prayer as we hold our immigrant sisters and brothers, their families and all involved in these events in a spirit of solidarity and hope.
Pope Leo has decried the disrespectful treatment of immigrants as unacceptable. Immigration is a moral matter that calls for respecting the dignity of immigrants and demands a response rooted in justice and mercy. Now is the time.
As people of faith, we refuse to stand by silently as we see our immigrant neighbors being treated with stunning cruelty in repeated instances by government agents. Executive orders resulting in mass deportations invoke widespread fear – including fear of family separation. Contrary to Administration claims, immigrants, many who have been here for decades without a criminal record, and even some U.S. citizens, are being apprehended by ICE.
The inhumane treatment of immigrants and the lack of due process are clear violations of the Constitution and human rights. The militarization of our cities and communities erodes trust and jeopardizes the safety of all. Violence leading to death of immigrants and non-violent protestors must be investigated thoroughly and all governmental agents must be held accountable.
