In Memory of Sister Madonna Meyer

June 1, 1924 – October 16, 2010

Sister Madonna Meyer, daughter of Frank and Catherine (Sauber) Meyer, was born Mary Madonna Meyer on June 1, 1924, in Key West, IA. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in September 1949 and professed her perpetual vows on June 19, 1955.

She received her BM at Loras College, Dubuque, IA, and did graduate work at the American Conservatory in Chicago, IL; the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN; and Clarke College, Dubuque, IA. Her ministry was music and her musical teaching career, spanning 41 years, took her to Monticello, MN, Clare, Elkader, Storm Lake, Whittemore and St. Columbkille, Dubuque, all in Iowa.

Sister Madonna continued to use her musical skills to brighten days and bring smiles to sisters and staff in the Nagle Center infirmary with weekly sing-a-longs after she retired to Mt. Loretto in 1993. Sister stated, “I like to think I make others happy with my music.”

Surviving are her sisters Loretta Meyer and Marilyn (Tom) Spates, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 61 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Harold and Francis Meyer.
