In Memory of Sister Lawrence Mulligan

September 12, 1917 – March 19, 2010

Sister Mary Lawrence Mulligan, 92, daughter of James and Lena Mulligan, was born on September 12, 1917, in Dubuque, Iowa. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in June 1935 and professed her perpetual vows on June 9, 1941.

She received her BA from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, her MA from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and did graduate studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Her teaching career spanning 55 years, took her to Waukon, Algona, Lawler, Humboldt, Osage, Farley and Storm Lake, all in Iowa. She taught at Resurrection School in Dubuque from 1968-1971. Her ministry experience over the years included that of elementary, middle school, high school and part-time library staff member at Wahlert High School in Dubuque, from 1987-1993. With her entire religious life centered on the field of education, she taught CCD classes, went on several service projects and worked with the Legion of Mary as a spiritual director. Sister retired to Mount Loretto in 1993 and continued to use her library skills in the Mount Loretto library for many years. She enjoyed reading, theater, crafts, travel, prayer and community service. Symbolizing her generosity, Sister Lawrence daily lived her statement, “I enjoy volunteering my services wherever they are needed.”

Surviving are her sisters: Rosemary Siemke, Ruth Billmeyer, Marjorie Lorenz, Betty Siegert and Mary Latimer. Other survivors include nieces, nephews and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 74 years.
