In Memory of Sister Eunice Kane

January 9, 1912 – July 7, 2010

Sister Mary Eunice Kane, PBVM, 98, daughter of John and Frances (Fettkether) Kane, was born Bridget Eileen Kane on January 9, 1912, in Fairbank, IA. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in June of 1928 and professed her perpetual vows on December 27, 1933.

She received her BA from Loras College, Dubuque IA, and her MA from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. Her education career, spanning 57 years, took her to St. Columbkille, Dubuque IA (1931-1937, 1941-1942), Emerson, NE, Monticello, MN, Mason City, IA, Oregon IL, Sterling, IL, Manly, IA and the Dubuque Archdiocesan Office. Her ministries included teaching elementary, high school, and college classes, Director of Religious Ed, Religious Ed Consultant and Sauk Valley Area Religious Ed Coordinator. Sister Eunice was instrumental in establishing training at the midwest and national levels for catechists through the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) Leadership courses.

She enjoyed crocheting, coffee with friends, and most of all, spending time in prayer and community service. Speaking of all the bridges for transitions in her life at her 75th Jubilee, Sister Eunice stated, “As I walk this final bridge on the sunset side of life, my heart sings with thanks to Jesus, whose rod and staff give me courage and strength.”

Surviving are her brothers, Raymond, and Emmett (Mary Jane), her sister, Sister Clarice Kane, PBVM, many nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 82 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Harold (Irma), Louis (Doris), John J. (Lee) and Paul (Skip), her sisters Beatrice McCloud, and Frances (Norman) Robinson and a sister-in-law, Beverly Kane.
