In Memory of Sister Sheila Kane
June 29, 1923 – October 27, 2017
Sister Mary Sheila Kane, 94, daughter of Bartholomew and Pearl (Byrne), was born June Elizabeth Kane on June 29, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in September of 1945 and professed her perpetual vows on May 3, 1951.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and her master’s from University of Notre Dame. With her entire religious life centered in the field of music, her Presentation journey, spanning 64 years, took her to Danbury, Storm Lake, Sheldon, Farley, Humboldt, Whittemore, Osage, Charles City and Iowa City, all in Iowa, and Winner, South Dakota. Her ministries included music teacher, pastoral minister and hospitality coordinator.
Sister retired to Mount Loretto in 1988 and served as hospitality coordinator for many years. She enjoyed music, writing, movies, sports, her Irish heritage, prayer and community service. Symbolizing her hospitable spirit, Sister Sheila daily lived the scripture passage, “There are, in the end, three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love. (I Corinthians 13:13) Throughout her life she stated, “I enjoy volunteering my services wherever they are needed.”
Surviving is her sister Mary Ann Kane, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 72 years.
