In Memory of Harry Stanton
March 30, 1934 – October 11, 2016
Harry A. Stanton, 82, of Mason City, was born March 30, 1934 in rural Greene, Iowa to Ambrose and Martha (Maxwell) Stanton. He graduated from Greene High School in May, 1951. Immediately after high school while still residing in Greene, Harry worked as a court crier and bailiff for the honorable Judge Henry Graven.
He then attended Iowa State Teachers College for two years, served in the U.S. Army in Germany for two years, and was honorably discharged in August, 1956.
Harry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa in 1958. He was united in marriage to Mary Irene Rivers in Sioux City in August, 1958. He received a Master of Guidance and Counseling from the University of South Dakota.
Harry worked as an industrial arts, driver’s educator teacher and counselor at Union Township of LeMars, Pomeroy, Battle Creek, Manchester, and other Iowa schools. For six years he worked as a Registrar and Director of Admissions at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls.
He worked for twelve years as a Director of Admissions at Spencer School of Business, was the School Director for two years at Hamilton College, and owner of Stanton Insurance Service for twenty-five years.
He was a member of Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, Associate of the Presentation Sisters, Dubuque, Iowa, and Knights of Columbus.
Harry enjoyed spending time with family and friends, walking in the mornings, playing Bridge with his friends, doing volunteer work for the church and community and often could be found on the golf course.
Harry is survived by his wife, Mary Irene Stanton, of Mason City; five children, Lyndy (Dave) Werdin, of Lakeville, MN, Suzanne Logan, of New Berlin, TX, Patrick (Brenda) Stanton, of Dexter, MI, Cindy (Dan) Langanki, of Lino Lakes, MN, Sarah (Ron) Cray, of Indian Land, SC; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas (Susan), Roger, and James (Jan) Stanton; two sisters, Bernita Stanton, twin Harriet Clabough, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Billy Joe and Charles; sisters-in-law, Janice Stanton and Elsa Stanton; brother-in-law, Loren Clabough.
